Otford Railway Bridge

I note that the railway bridge is on the agenda at the local Neighbourhood meeting tonight. Was anyone from Otford in attendance?

From my discussions with various locals, it seems that there are some competing interests with respect to the bridge. On the one hand there is its heritage value, and on the other, the need for a safer bridge for the benefit of pedestrian and motorised traffic.

It would be good to engage in some sensible discussion about the views that people have.

  1. Hi Phil,
I went to the meeting and basically it is still where is was when Jackie was chasing the issue. Railcorp said it is on there agenda and the path (or lack of) is councils responsibility which they said they are waiting for Railcorp to do something about the bridge first. Ian Hill is chasing up Railcorp and I'll chase up council when I find out Ian's outcome. To be continued........Kaz

  2. I love the bridge, so hopefully people won't get me wrong that I want it demolished,or metal cages on it. I would just like to see the eastern side fixed up someway that we can re direct the children off the bridge rather than have to walk almost onto the road. Ian Hill & I have chatted recently and he knows now what I mean. Whether this is a issue with the railways and any others that love the bridge I am not to sure.. I feel positive that we can all come together to get something that is safer and still look great. Jackie B

  3. Thanks Kaz for the update you sent via email. It may worth posting the relevant contact details on here so people can send a submission. I will make an effort to do so.

Jackie, thanks for the bridge update. What is the general solution that you and Ian have discussed? I have to admit I don't know what was planned before the work stopped.

  4. My thoughts are, and they are only my thoughts, not of an engineer. The last metre of the brick wall (eastern side) of the bridge has already been broken - so I thought that perhaps there would be a way to remove this section of brick work , widen the walking path somehow using the cement footing that has recently been installed (I imagine for the previously proposed works.) Then the obviously rebuild brick work tying in back to the original bridge brickwork. This then takes the pedestrians away from the dangerous corner directing them to the grass area. Doesn't change the width of the road, therefore it still keeps the natural slowing effect that the bridge already creates. I could chat with Shane and he might be able to draw up an example of what I am trying to explain.
